I had the pleasure of being coached by my peer Arenthia Hammond. My inquiry is based on helping my focus student control his behavior in class. Arenthia observed my studnet in class and we dsicussed some strategies that she thought would help my student improve his behavior in class. There wasn't much physical data for her to collect since my data is mostly observation. Arenthia previously conducted an inquiry on one of her students who had trouble controlling his emotions in class.
She gave me some ideas to think about with my student since we are aiming for him to control his actions in class. One idea presented was to place a stop sign on his desk when I would want his to change his actions in class. She also thought of puting a star on his desk when he did something positive. The stop sign would be something that could be removed and the stars would be collected on his desk. The objective would be to increase Jason's motivation to have more stars on his desks and the stop sign would be a quiet way for him to know that his actions aren't permitted in the classroom.
She also suggested that I give him guided questions in his journal to stimulate deeper thought in his entries. I just started a journal between me and Jason to get him thinking about his own feelings and why he behaves the way he does. It is also an outlet for his to recieve attention from an adult since I reply to his entries. Having guided questions to steer his entries is a great way from him to write more since his last entry was just one sentence.
Currently in my inquiry, I think I need to collect more data through conferencing with my focus student. I think that if we conference in the begining of the day and go over some goals that we have for him that day, that will help him try to reach an intended goal and we can also go over topics that arise in his jounral if he feels like talking.
Overall, the peer coaching was a resourceful way of gaining ideas that I had not thught of to help Jason.
